Introduction.

When a port on my Mac broke and I could no longer develop, I asked Apple to repair it. As a result, the repair was completed in about 4 days and returned smoothly, so I will summarize the experience.

Two USBC ports on my MacBook Pro no longer function.

As previously stated in the article [Mac] Trade in an Intel Mac for an M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14-inch”, I purchased an M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14-inch about six months ago.

In fact, one of the three USB ports on the Mac was not working immediately after purchase, but the other two ports were working, so I thought, “Oh well,” and kept using it.

However, the other day, for unknown reasons, one of the ports also stopped functioning, and the port was not recognized, so it could not be charged.

In the development of “Mia,” a talking cat-like robot that speaks various dialects, it is necessary to connect the application from a PC and two separate hardware devices at the same time via USB TypeC ports, so if only one port is available, the development will not be possible.

I thought it was possible that the ports were no longer recognized due to dust buildup on the terminals, so I wiped the inside, but this did not improve the situation.

So, I had no choice but to send it to Apple for repair. In my case, I could not do my work at all without my PC, so I did not want to send it in for repair if possible, but I had no choice.

Contacted Apple Support; did not enroll in Apple Care…

Open the Apple Support page by signing in with your Apple ID.

Chat support is available, so I initiated a chat and received a reply immediately. Reported the situation to the person in charge.

I did not have Apple Care, but since it had been less than a year since the purchase, I was told that the repair could be free under certain conditions. If there would be a repair charge, they said they would notify me via email after a technician investigated.

Also, follow the instructions of the person in charge and set “Find My Mac” and “FireVault” to off.

The hard drive should be connected, and the data should be transferred via TimeMachine, as it may be initialized during repair.

The Apple representative made all the subsequent pickup arrangements, and a Yamato courier was scheduled to pick up the next night.

The next night, a Yamato Transport person came to my house to pick up the Mac, and all I had to do was hand it over. Since it was payment on delivery, there was no need to pay.

Repair completed on the same day. Around 4 days to reach you.

The repair status was available through Apple’s online system.

It arrived at Apple the day after pickup and was repaired in about 5 hours after that. I thought it would take longer, but was surprised at how quickly it was completed.

Maybe it was not a hardware problem, but a software problem that was resolved with a reset.

The Mac returned about 4 days after the repair request. Both port problems were repaired and the development environment was successfully restored. The quick response was extremely helpful.

A paper certification that the repair had been completed was enclosed with the return, but it did not specify what had caused the problem in the end, so the cause remained unknown, but it had been cured.

Then, I used Migration Assistant to recover the data from the backup hard disk. It took about 3-4 hours to migrate the data because the data volume was about 300 GB and the transfer speed was several MB to several tens of MB and the Internet environment was not very good.

summary

Apple’s repair response was fast and simple: other than locating the Mac and turning off FireVault, there was no hassle, and pickup was easy. It was also convenient to be able to check the status of the repair online.

Although I came back in four days, I was almost unable to work during that time, which was a drawback, but I happened to have a mycoplasma infection and was not in a condition to work. However, I happened to be suffering from mycoplasma and was not in a condition to work, so this time it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

If the product has a warranty of one year or less, it may be repaired free of charge, so it may be quicker to request this service if a problem occurs during the warranty period.
